We use Google and Facebook Adwordss to draw about a third of our new visitors. About $200/month average in fees, deductible.

The quality communication of this site is a huge draw. People can find the information they want quickly and easily. Over half of new customers volunteer compliments about the site. This quality leads to respect and trust - before they ever call or e-mail.
Like any business, communication is key. Respond quickly to any customer inquiries, whether it's by phone or e-mail.

3. Little experience required. Don't offer design until you are ready.
There are two main skills for planting: Design & Installation.
Design is not a required offering. Tailor the site to do the sales & installation only, then add the design later as you get more comfortable.
Installation can be learned fairly quickly. My tried & true planting method ensures that most plants will survive, even if the customer is negligent about watering.

4. Very low overhead.
The site spells out that it is "online plant sales", so there is no retail storefront. All customer contact occurs on the customers property. Fixed overhead includes: vehicles, equipment, insurance, website hosting.

5. Almost no competition.
Just try to find a local business with this level of quality information, and prices, in the landscape sales or installation business of your location (or any location).

6. Easy sales methods.
Typical customer visits website first, pre-qualifies themself, then calls ready to buy. This saves a LOT of time answering questions.
Talking about plants with folks is great. It is a constructive enterprise, not destructive or maintenance. People are buying from you because they want to spend money, not because something broke, or needs to be upkept.

7. Pleasant working conditions.
The bulk of workdays are during the comfortable seasons of the year. Customers generally don't call for planting when it's extremely hot or cold: pleasant weather drives purchase decisions.

8. Employees not necessary.
You have a choice of doing the work yourself, contracting day labor, or, hiring someone. Trees2Go.com is doing very well with no regular employees, just independent contractors (one for 4+ years now). Less headaches. We are growing bigger all the time.

Work very hard for half the year. Maintain equipment, develop the website, and vacation at other times.

9. One internet address or two: your choice.
We operate this site with 2 names in the phone book. This is OK, since it is 2 distinct businesses - Plant sales versus installation. Trees2Go.com is listed in the "Garden Center" section of the phone book, while "A1Planting.com" is listed in the "Landscape" section of the phone book.
Note: Insist on the ".com" being included in your official LLC name, as you want people to know there is a website every step of the way.

Mike believes operating under a single name is best for markets smaller than ours (1,000,000 people). You just can't drop 2 brands on a smaller market, nor at the same time. There is no logo needed below the Trees2Go.com Logo. Just say Planting instead of A1Planting.

Feel free to add another TLD (like the Trees2Go.com/A1Planting.com marriage) at some point, maybe "BobsPlanting.com" or "BobsPlantSales.com" or anything.

10. Warranty claims are good.
We've all known how poor roof, tire, or other warranties, are. We offer a real warranty with no pro-rating and no paperwork. The occasional claim is not hard to honor: the hole is dug already! The goodwill generated (and additional business) more than makes up for the cost of materials and labor.
